Andy Clark's Logjam Metaphor For Concepts𓇯 suggests that veterinary students learn about Bright or Dull Cows𓅮 better because they have words around which to classify their perceptions.

Suppose a concept is not something with necessary and sufficient conditions (which it isn't), but rather a collection of summarized experiences.
Per Clark, identifying this inchoate summary of experiences with a word makes it easier to learn more about the concept. (I think of it as the word providing a database index that makes finding where to "put" new experiences happen automatically. This is surely only the weakest possible metaphor for what actually happens.)
That is: it is *very important* that teachers of veterinary medicine start with a word – "this cow is dull" – and then gradually use examples to build a "definition" of that word in the minds of the students. That's how humans work.
